Leaving (1989) is this interesting blend of comedy and drama that really captures the bittersweet transition of youth. Set in a dreary Catholic school in Greenock, Scotland, it follows three boys as they approach the end of their time there. Each boy's journey reflects different paths and choices, which gives the film a nice variety of tones. The atmosphere is thick with that typical school tension, and the pacing feels just right as it weaves through their lives, with moments of levity mixed in. The performances are quite genuine, capturing the awkwardness and humor of adolescence. There's a certain rawness to it, possibly drawn from its TV movie roots, that gives it a distinctive charm you don’t find in more polished productions.
