Les enfants du pays

The film unfolds in the French Ardennes, where the German Army prepares to invade France. Old Gustave and his teenage granddaughter, Camille, along with his grandson, Etienne, are among the last remaining inhabitants of their village. With most residents having evacuated, Gustave relishes his solitude, though Camille struggles with the isolation and her grandfather's domineering nature.

As the story progresses, the arrival of a patrol of African-born soldiers, the Tirailleurs Sénégalais, introduces a new dynamic to the village. This encounter prompts Camille to confront her feelings of loneliness and her relationship with Gustave.
