Les Misérables (1998) directed by Bille August really captures the grit of 19th century France. The film dives deep into the struggles of Jean Valjean, portrayed with a raw intensity that feels very real. The pacing is interesting—sometimes slow, allowing you to really soak in the atmosphere, and other times it picks up during the revolutionary scenes, which are quite stirring. I find the themes of redemption and justice resonate strongly throughout the narrative. Javert, played by Geoffrey Rush, is haunting in his pursuit. The practical effects and settings create a convincing historical backdrop that adds to the authenticity. It's a heavy watch, but it draws you in with its emotional weight and strong performances.
Strong performances from both leads.A unique take on a classic story.Atmospheric settings enhance the narrative.
