The film follows Kolya Chimbartsev, who arrives at a boarding school in the port of Krasin, anxious about his father's absence. His father, a hydrologist, has not returned from a scientific station on an ice floe, prompting Kolya and his friends to use the school radio station to try to make contact. Instead of facing punishment for their mischief, the boys opt for a movie, but a storm warning leads to unexpected consequences.
