The story unfolds in a small village by the sea, where inventing gadgets is a celebrated tradition. Lotte's father, Oskar, is one of the top inventors, facing off against his rival Adalbert in an annual competition. When Lotte and her friend Bruno discover a mysterious book at sea, they inadvertently summon Susumu, a gardener from Japan, who introduces the villagers to judo.
