Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová

The film tells the story of Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová, a writer and author of a famous cookbook. Set in the town of Litomyšl, it portrays the struggles she faces with the local bourgeois society, who often incorporate German words into their conversations. As a patriot, Rettigová fights for the standard Czech language and encourages young girls and students to embrace their cultural identity through literature.

A subplot revolves around a planned wedding between Maiden Lenka and Dr. Plavec. When Rettigová learns of this engagement, she takes it upon herself to intervene by meeting with both fiancés separately. Meanwhile, Lenka's former admirer, Valenta, returns from abroad and seeks Rettigová's assistance in winning her back. This intertwining of love, ambition, and cultural pride characterizes the narrative, making it a significant story in Czech cinematic history.
