Mandrake is this curious little gem from 2010 that dives deep into the horror subgenre. The jungle setting adds a thick layer of atmosphere, almost suffocating at times, which ties in beautifully with the themes of greed and the consequences of disturbing ancient spirits. The practical effects used for the titular plant creature give it an unsettling realism that CGI often misses. The pacing takes its time to build suspense, letting the viewer really feel the weight of the expedition’s choices. Performances are solid, especially from the lead, Darren McCall, who embodies that classic adventurer trope with a hint of vulnerability. The whole experience feels like a love letter to those old creature features but gives it a modern twist that’s hard to ignore.
Interesting blend of adventure and horror.Solid practical effects that stand out.Themes of greed and consequences are prominent.
