Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials ramps up the tension with a more expansive world. The desolation of the Scorch is palpable, with a gritty atmosphere that feels more brutal than the first film. Wes Ball really leans into practical effects here, especially in the action sequences; there's a rawness that keeps you on edge. The characters grow, and the performances, especially from Dylan O'Brien, bring a sense of urgency to their quest against WCKD. The pacing is relentless but balanced, allowing for some quieter moments amidst the chaos. It’s interesting how the themes of survival and trust deepen, and it does a decent job of building on the first film without just repeating the same beats.
