The narrative follows Inspector Paul Lang as he investigates the murder of his friend, public prosecutor Barnekow, found dead in a crocodile pool. His prime suspect, Immanuel Tauss, is in prison, leading Lang to navigate a dangerous web of criminal activities involving the local ring clubs.

As he delves deeper into the case, Lang teams up with his assistant Conrad Ruppert and his secretary, while also encountering the ambitious Viktor Parkov and the enigmatic vaudeville owner Irma Berger.
