Mountain Dew

The story follows J. Hamilton Vance as he journeys to the mountains of Kentucky to gather material for his writing. Here, he falls for Roxie Bradley, the daughter of a moonshiner, and faces initial distrust from the local community. As Vance integrates himself into their lives, he becomes the teacher at a local log schoolhouse, which brings about conflict with the resentful former teacher.

As the narrative unfolds, Vance's relationship with Roxie becomes complicated by jealousy and rumors. Lily Bud Raines, a local woman, spreads the idea that Vance is a federal agent investigating moonshining operations, creating further tension.
