So, 'Murders at the House of Death' is quite the interesting mix of crime and horror, with a mystery that keeps you guessing. Directed by Hisashi Kimura, it's set in a university backdrop, which gives it a fresh atmosphere, I think. Yuzuru Hamura, our reluctant protagonist, really embodies that classic student archetype—forced into a mystery club led by the rather eccentric Kyosuke Akechi. And then there's Hiruko Kenzaki, the private detective who stirs the pot quite a bit. The pacing is solid, not rushed, allowing for some nice tension-building. The practical effects, though not overdone, are quite effective in creating that eerie vibe. Performances are decent, with a hint of dark humor that offsets the more chilling moments. It’s a unique blend of genres, for sure.
