Set in occupied Latvia, My Freedom centers on Alicija, a 33-year-old liberal who becomes involved in the Awakening movement. Her husband, Ilgvars, is older and urges her to be cautious as she rises to prominence amid the country's struggle for independence.

As Alicija's activism grows, she faces a moral crisis when she receives an anonymous letter suggesting Ilgvars may have a hidden past as a KGB informant. This revelation forces her to confront the implications of his past on her close friend Normunds, a poet supporting the movement. Torn between her commitment to the revolution and her loyalty to her husband, Alicija's journey reflects the emotional turmoil of a nation in transition.
