The documentary begins with a dramatized reconstruction of the sea voyage undertaken by brothers Hartog Simon Pos and Matthijs in 1774 as they travel to Suriname. Nearly two hundred years later, Diego Pos retraces this journey in reverse, being the last of the Pos family to leave Suriname.

Diego embarks on a quest to uncover his Jewish family's history and the broader narrative of Jews in Suriname. His journey leads him to unexpected relatives, including Simon Matthijs, who was born to a slave in the eighteenth century. The film intertwines Diego's search with the story of Hartog and Matthijs, showcasing the complexities of their relationship, which faced challenges due to romantic entanglements.
