The narrative centers on Jiří, a high school teacher whose quiet life is disrupted by a visit from his sister Růžena. She reveals her escape from her husband, a textile merchant, citing his greed. However, as the story unfolds, Jiří discovers that Růžena's choices are more complicated than they seem.

Růžena's situation becomes dire when her lover, a dragoon captain, abandons her after learning of her pregnancy. Her despair leads her to believe that her brother has rejected her, pushing her toward a drastic decision. This emotional turmoil reflects the struggles faced by individuals caught in societal and familial expectations.
