Outcast

The narrative follows Miriam Gibson, who is seduced by an adventurer and left to fend for herself and their child. Facing poverty, Miriam turns to prostitution to support her child, but after a tragic loss, she relocates to London. There, she becomes the housekeeper and later the mistress of barrister Geoffrey Sherwood, who struggles with alcoholism after being jilted by his fiancée.

As Miriam and Geoffrey develop a relationship, she hopes for a future together. However, complications arise when Geoffrey's former fiancée re-enters his life, leading to a tumultuous love triangle. Ultimately, Geoffrey realizes the depth of Miriam's character compared to Valentine’s shallow nature, leading to their marriage in a Scottish kirk and their departure for Buenos Aires to start anew.
