Poodle Springs, directed by Bob Rafelson, brings Raymond Chandler’s classic character, Philip Marlowe, into the late 90s with a unique twist. The atmosphere is very much a blend of classic noir and the more laid-back vibe of a suspicious desert town. It’s interesting to see Marlowe, played by James Caan, navigating a marriage while peeling back layers of a land scheme that’s got all the classic hallmarks of deceit. The pacing has its moments; it feels like it has the weight of a TV movie but with some solid performances that keep it engaging. The cinematography captures the sun-drenched desolation well, and there’s a certain charm in its practical effects that echo the noir stylings without feeling too stylized. It’s a different take, sure, but that’s what makes it stand out in the genre.
