Psycho III brings a unique blend of horror and psychological tension that feels a bit different from its predecessors. Directed by Anthony Perkins himself, you can sense a personal touch in the way Norman Bates is portrayed. The atmosphere is thick with unease, particularly when Maureen, the nun, shows up. She’s got that haunting resemblance to Marion Crane, which stirs up all kinds of twisted memories for Norman. The pacing is methodical, building suspense gradually, and you can feel the tension rise as Mother’s influence looms large. The practical effects are still quite solid, adding to the visceral experience. Perkins’ performance delivers a mix of vulnerability and menace that keeps you guessing about his intentions.
