"Puud olid..." centers on Hind, a young man struggling to maintain his family's farm after a series of tragic losses to typhus. As the youngest son, he faces the daunting task of managing the property on his own, while dealing with the challenges posed by a farmhand named Jaak, who complicates matters rather than helps.

Hind's relationship with Paabu, the wife of his deceased older brother, adds another layer to the narrative.
