Qin Xianglian

The film follows the story of Qin Xianglian, whose husband, Chen Shimei, disappears while pursuing the imperial exam. After three years, Chen returns as a successful scholar but chooses to abandon his wife and children, leading to a series of tragic events. Qin Xianglian, determined to seek justice, takes her case to the government of Kaifeng, challenging the power of her husband's newfound status.

The narrative builds around the conflict between personal loyalty and the law, culminating in a dramatic court scene where Bao Zheng, the judge, must navigate the pressures from the emperor's family while upholding justice.
