Ransom Express is an interesting blend of action and thriller set against the chaotic backdrop of Kuala Lumpur. Alice Chan Wai plays Ruby, really bringing an edginess to her character caught in the web of underworld dealings. The pacing is a bit erratic, which surprisingly adds to the tension, especially as Simon, her dopey boyfriend, stumbles through the plot. There’s a grittiness to the practical effects, and while the plot may seem straightforward, it has those moments of unexpected turns. The relationship dynamics are a bit cliché but add a unique flavor to the unfolding chaos. It’s definitely a film that doesn’t hold back and showcases a certain raw energy that was prominent in the early 2000s action scene.
