Revolta dos Malês

Set in January 1835, the narrative follows Guilhermina, a 27-year-old enslaved woman of Muslim origin, who strives to purchase her freedom and that of her young daughter, Teresa. Despite her efforts, her master, Souza Velho, refuses to honor his promise to sell the letter of manumission for Teresa. The film portrays the tensions within the Muslim community when Pacific Licutan, a respected Islamic leader, is arrested, igniting a fervent response from those affected.

As tensions rise, Guilhermina sees the impending uprising as her only hope to secure freedom for her daughter. Revolta dos Malês presents a poignant exploration of personal and communal struggle against the backdrop of historical events, providing insight into the complexities of identity and resistance during a turbulent period in Brazil's past.
