Sanchû Uprising: Voices at Dawn

Set in 1726 in Sanchu, Okayama Prefecture, the film focuses on farmers negotiating with the feudal domain to obtain tax exemptions. As tensions rise, infighting leads to suppression by the samurai class, forcing the farmers to unite for battle. The story centers on Jihei, a cowardly protagonist grappling with the risks associated with rebellion, which resonates with contemporary issues of injustice.

The film is notable for its beautiful digital black-and-white photography by Kenta Tawara, which pays homage to classical Japanese cinema.
