Savages, directed by Oliver Stone, is an intense ride through the dark underbelly of the drug trade. You’ve got Ben and Chon, two pot growers who really think they’ve got it made until the Mexican cartel throws a wrench in their plans by kidnapping their girlfriend, Ophelia. The atmosphere is gritty, and Stone really captures the tension that permeates the story. The pacing is a bit uneven, but that adds to the chaotic feel of the narrative. It’s notable for its raw performances, especially from Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Taylor Kitsch, who bring an almost palpable chemistry. The practical effects and some of the brutal violence are striking—almost surreal at times—making the whole experience unsettling yet engaging.
