The story follows Yusuf, a quiet man who lives in a village with his mother and wife. He has a longstanding feud with Seyfettin, who once attempted to take his wife from him. When his pregnant wife dies during a fateful attempt to reach the city, Yusuf's grief leads him to take drastic action against Seyfettin, resulting in his imprisonment.

After his release, Yusuf starts a new life as a carriage driver on the islands, where he becomes enthralled with Mine, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. However, the shadow of his past looms large as Seyfettin continues to disrupt Yusuf's attempts at happiness, ultimately leading to further tragedy. The film's exploration of guilt, revenge, and love against the backdrop of rural life offers a poignant narrative that reflects Turkish society.
