Sleeping Sickness

The narrative centers on Ebbo, who manages a sleeping sickness program in Africa, and his wife Vera, who struggles with her sense of belonging in the ex-pat community of Yaoundé. Their daughter, Helen, is in boarding school in Germany, which adds to Vera's feelings of isolation. As Ebbo grapples with his commitment to his work and his love for Vera, the tension between his professional obligations and personal life becomes increasingly fraught.

Years later, the story introduces Alex Nzila, a French doctor of Congolese descent, who returns to Cameroon to assess a development project. Instead of finding clarity and purpose, Alex encounters Ebbo, who has become a shadow of his former self.
