Small Engine Repair has this gritty, almost claustrophobic vibe. It’s set mostly in a garage, which really adds to the tension. The dialogue feels sharp and real—like you’re eavesdropping on these guys who have history, but then it spirals into something darker once that young hotshot shows up. John Pollono directs with a tight grip, and you can feel the heat of their emotions simmering underneath. The performances are raw, especially from John Bernthal, who captures this blend of loyalty and resentment. There’s a real sense of how past choices can haunt you. The pacing is deliberate, allowing the tension to build nicely, making the reveals feel earned rather than forced. Not your standard thriller, that's for sure.
Released in theaters and on VOD in 2021.Based on Pollono's play of the same name.Filmed on location in New England.Features practical effects with minimal CGI.
