Staroružová dráma

The film follows the Jablonczay family starting in 1882, focusing first on the two older generations. Maria, portrayed by Emília Vášáryová, is trapped in an unfulfilling marriage while raising her children amid her despotic influence. Each daughter copes with their mother's nature in unique ways as their lives unfold.

In the second part, the narrative shifts to the youngest generation, introducing Lenka, played by Zuzana Vačková. Her journey begins in a convent, guided by a compassionate mother superior, as she gradually discovers the world beyond her strict upbringing.
