Sterne

Sterne presents a conceptual look at what a star is in film, represented as a black dot on a negative. The film features frames painted in reverse colors, creating a striking visual effect where colors emerge against a black background, reminiscent of stained glass in cathedrals.

The music for Sterne was improvised by Jasper van’t Hof, with vocals provided by Eva Mattes. This blend of visual art and music adds depth to the film’s exploration of cinematic representation. Premiering in competition at the Berlinale in 1985, Sterne stands out as a creative expression of animation from the 1980s.
