Sun and Man

Set against the backdrop of the Cultural Revolution, Sun and Man follows a husband-and-wife pair of painters who return to their homeland, only to face persecution. Their daughter, born under the five-starred red flag, experiences discrimination from childhood.

The male lead meets a tragic fate, freezing to death as a fugitive, leaving behind a poignant question mark drawn in the snow. As the story unfolds, the daughter chooses to emigrate, challenging the notion of love for one's motherland with her stark question: "You love the motherland, but does the motherland love you?"

Completed in 1981, Sun and Man faced high-level criticism and was shelved due to its perceived anti-Party sentiment. Despite this, the film remains a significant piece of cinema history, reportedly surviving in the studio archive even though it has never been publicly screened. A Taiwanese adaptation titled Portrait of a Fanatic was released in 1982.
