Surftide 77 is one of those quirky comedies that doesn’t take itself too seriously, really. Directed by Lee Frost, it follows Private Eye Bernard Bingbang, who’s on the hunt for the runaway niece of a meddling old lady, Agatha Bungworthy. The premise has this oddball charm, especially with the birthmark clue that’s almost absurd yet fitting. The pacing is breezy, reflective of the 60s vibe, and there’s this light-heartedness throughout that makes you chuckle. The performances, particularly from the leads, are entertainingly over-the-top. It feels like a nostalgic trip, with its playful tone and the way it captures the era’s offbeat humor. Not quite your standard detective story, which is what gives it character.
