Surge of Tenderness

The film revolves around Private Peycho Peychev, known as Peychina, who finds himself caught in the turmoil of the Bulgarian army fighting against the Germans. His sensitive nature contrasts sharply with the brutality of war, as he grapples with the expectations placed upon him by his commanding officer and the new ruling powers in his village.

After being seriously injured, Peychina returns to his birthplace, where the political landscape has shifted dramatically. He is drawn to his artistic talents rather than the violence of war, finding solace in carving an image of Elena, the woman he loves. Despite the hope for a 'surge of tenderness' at the war's end, he faces the grim realities that challenge this ideal.

As the story unfolds, Peychina's moral struggles deepen. He becomes involved in the death of an anarchist and must confront the complexities of loyalty and resistance against oppressive forces. Ultimately, when offered a gun, he chooses to reject violence, emphasizing his desire for peace over conflict.
