The film centers on the Hanák family, which consists of four generations living together in a remote area. The grandmother is full of life and passionate about writing detective stories, while her daughter, Ms. Hanáková, has a big heart but lacks singing talent, making cooking her lifelong pursuit. Mr. Hanák, the dispatcher, has a love for animals, tending to various creatures around their home.

The family also includes an older daughter, her husband Peter, who is often lazy, and their hyperactive sons, known for their mischievous antics. Adding to the dynamic is Mr. Kestrel, an informal family member who spends significant time at their home, often raising suspicions. The story takes a turn when the younger daughter, Kate, announces her pregnancy, setting the stage for humorous family interactions and revelations.
