The Awakening is quite the atmospheric piece. Set in post-War England, it unfolds with this ghostly eeriness that really captures the time period. Nick Murphy’s direction has this slow, creeping tension that builds nicely, and the performances, especially Rebecca Hall’s, are just spot on. She portrays a skeptical writer who starts off dismissive but gradually gets pulled into the haunting at the boys' boarding school. The practical effects are effective without going overboard, which adds a layer of realism. There's a constant play of light and shadow that enhances the mood, and the themes of grief and belief are woven in subtly. It’s one of those films that lingers with you long after the credits roll, engaging in more than just the ghost story surface.
