The Butcher is a gritty, low-budget horror that really leans into its rural setting. Gorsuch does a decent job creating tension, especially with the claustrophobic farmhouse scenes. The pacing has its lulls, but the practical effects are surprisingly effective for a film of this caliber, giving it a raw edge. Performances are pretty earnest, though some characters are more fleshed out than others. The themes of isolation and survival hit hard, especially when you realize how far these students are from any help. It's not groundbreaking, but it scratches that itch for anyone into gritty survival horror.
