The Empresses

The Empresses tells the story of Little Elizabeth, who was destined to marry Louis XV and become Queen of France. However, after the death of her father, Peter the Great, in 1725, Russia enters a period of instability marked by palace coups and power struggles.

The film highlights the challenges faced by Catherine I, Peter's widow, as she becomes the first woman to rule Imperial Russia. Her desire to fulfill her husband's promise to their daughter is thwarted when young Louis XV refuses to marry Elizabeth, deeming her illegitimate due to the circumstances of her birth. The narrative captures the complexities of royal expectations and the shifting dynamics of power during a pivotal time in Russian history.
