The Enemy Below is quite the piece from 1957, isn’t it? Dick Powell directs this tense cat-and-mouse naval battle that feels both claustrophobic and expansive. The pacing is deliberate, drawing you into the psychological warfare between the USS Haynes and the German U-Boat. The performances are solid, especially the leads, who manage to imbue their characters with a real sense of duty and tension. Practical effects are utilized well, giving the film an authentic feel, especially in those underwater sequences. The themes of honor and survival resonate, but it’s the atmosphere that really stands out—there's this constant sense of looming dread. It’s a nice blend of action and strategy that many of today’s war films could learn from.
