The Fearless Otojiro's Company

In 1897, Kawakami Otojiro, an actor, director, and theatre company leader, embarks on a difficult tour of the United States with his wife and fellow actors. As they navigate a foreign environment where language barriers and unexpected setbacks abound, Otojiro and his troupe encounter numerous challenges, including financial woes and internal conflicts.

The story takes a turn when they arrive in Boston and witness a performance of The Merchant of Venice by the renowned actor Henry Irving. Inspired, Otojiro and his company decide to create a Japanese rendition of the play. Utilizing limited rehearsal time and a mix of broken dialogue and improvisation, they perform for an audience that is both foreign and unfamiliar with their cultural nuances.
