In The Great Distance Delivers Crane, a young boy named Dorje and his sister Kelsang live with their grandmother in a Tibetan village on the Qinghai plateau. After losing their mother, they long for their father's presence, who is often away. Their lives take a turn when they find an injured baby black-necked crane and decide to care for it. As winter approaches, they embark on a motorcycle journey to return the crane to its wintering grounds in Yunnan.

Their father, realizing they have left home without permission, sets out to find them.
