The Great Silence

The Great Silence focuses on the world’s largest single aperture radio telescope in Esperanza, Puerto Rico. It captures radio waves from the farthest edges of the universe while being home to the last wild population of endangered Puerto Rican parrots. This documentary presents an interplay between technology and nature, highlighting the observations of parrots about humanity's quest for extraterrestrial life.

The film features a subtitled script co-created with science fiction author Ted Chiang. It delves into the concept of translation as a means to understand the connections between living and nonliving entities, as well as the technological and cosmic realms. In a fable-like manner, it reflects on vocal learning, a trait shared by both parrots and humans, and uses this to explore deeper themes of communication and existence in the universe.
