The Hottest State is an interesting slice of life, capturing the struggles of a young Texan trying to find his footing in NYC. Ethan Hawke's direction brings a raw, almost intimate vibe to the film, and you can really feel the weight of relationships in this one. The music is woven beautifully throughout, thanks to the singer/songwriter character, which adds layers to the emotional landscape. Performances are quite solid, especially from the leads, and there's something almost nostalgic about the way it captures that youthful yearning. The pacing feels like a leisurely stroll, which might not sit well with everyone, but it works for the tone Hawke is going for here. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but that just adds to its charm.
