The Invaders (2023) is a curious blend of horror and Western that takes some intriguing risks. Erin Doyle Cooper crafts a tense atmosphere, with the desolate landscapes almost feeling like another character in the film. The pacing is deliberate, allowing for a slow build-up that really emphasizes the mounting dread faced by the pregnant pioneer woman and her family. Themes of isolation and fate are heavily woven into the narrative, amplified by some solid practical effects that give it a gritty authenticity. Performances are earnest, especially from the lead, who manages to convey both vulnerability and strength. It’s an interesting exploration of supernatural horror set against a Western backdrop, making it stand out in both genres. Not your typical frontier tale for sure.
