The Last Best Year is quite the poignant exploration of isolation and resilience. Bernadette Peters delivers a compelling performance as Jane, a woman grappling with a severe illness and the absence of family support. There's this haunting atmosphere throughout, helped by Mary Tyler Moore's layered portrayal of the reluctant therapist who becomes Jane’s lifeline. The pacing does have its lulls, but that lends to a more introspective feel, making the heavier themes of vulnerability and human connection resonate even more. It’s one of those TV movies that digs deep into emotional landscapes, and while it might not have flashy practical effects, its raw performances carry the weight of the story. Definitely a unique piece from the era.
