The Marshes

The Marshes presents a detailed look at the largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East and West Asia, covering two-thirds of southern Iraq. Kassem Hawal, who directed, wrote, and shot the film, highlights the rich cultural and environmental significance of the area.

The documentary runs for 45 minutes and serves as a historical record of a region facing severe ecological threats. Following the actions of the Iraqi regime in 1985, which aimed to drain the marshes, the film also addresses the resulting humanitarian and environmental crises. Kassem Hawal preserved a copy of the film after the original materials were destroyed, ensuring its message could reach a global audience.
