The Projects is an intriguing blend of comedy and science fiction, all set against the backdrop of a housing project in suburban Osaka. The film captures the day-to-day oddities of life in such a place, like the quirky dynamics of neighbors and the mundane chaos of urban living. Hinako and Seiji, played by Naomi Fujiyama and Ittoku Kishibe, are refreshingly detached from the antics around them, highlighting a sense of ennui. The pacing is relaxed, almost meditative, allowing the viewer to soak in the atmosphere of their environment. There’s a unique charm in how the film uses practical effects, even in scenes that are otherwise ordinary, making the oddities feel all the more pronounced. It’s a curious piece that probably won’t fit everyone’s taste but certainly offers a distinctive perspective.
