The ROH Live: The Tales of Hoffmann

The Tales of Hoffmann follows the character Hoffmann as he navigates his heartbreaks, driven by the rival Councillor Lindorf. The narrative unfolds through three tales of love, each thwarted by a villain resembling Lindorf. The first story centers on Hoffmann's obsession with Olympia, a mechanical doll, whose fate is sealed by the inventor Coppélius.

The opera continues with the tale of Giulietta, a courtesan who abandons Hoffmann for riches from the magician Dappertutto. Finally, Hoffmann recounts his love for Antonia, whose singing leads her to a tragic end at the hands of the sinister Doctor Miracle. As Hoffmann emerges from his drunken state, he realizes that his heartache fuels his artistic expression, guided by the Muse.
