The Romance of Yushima

The film follows Hayase, a schoolteacher who has been raised by Sakai after losing his parents in a war. As he works on a German-Japanese dictionary with Sakai, he hides his secret marriage to Otsuta, a former geisha, which complicates their relationship. Otsuta wants Hayase to reveal their marriage but understands the challenges he faces with Sakai's expectations.

The plot thickens when Otsuta is mistakenly identified as a pickpocket and her past as a geisha is thrust into the spotlight by the media. This revelation forces Hayase to confront his obligations to Sakai, who desires him to marry his daughter, Taeko.
