The Shadows are Crawling follows young scientist Jamal Zakhidov, who believes the ancient city of Aran lies hidden in Azerbaijan. He aims to organize an expedition to uncover its ruins, enlisting the help of his friend Jalil, a knowledgeable archaeologist. Their journey is complicated by the interference of Imam-zade, a foreign secret agent intent on thwarting their efforts.

As Zakhidov and Jalil navigate the challenges of their expedition, they encounter the locals and an old man named Murtaz, who reveals a dark history tied to the land. The film delves into themes of discovery, betrayal, and the struggle against external forces. Ultimately, the discovery of uranium in the rocks adds a layer of intrigue to their quest, highlighting the importance of the site's geological significance.
