The Skating Rink

The Skating Rink centers on a local civil servant whose infatuation with a figure skater leads him to embezzle funds in order to create a hidden ice rink. This act sets off a chain of events that brings together an unusual cast of characters, culminating in a murder that unravels the fragile situations they find themselves in.

Premiering in July 2018, The Skating Rink was commissioned by Garsington Opera. Its narrative weaves together jealousy, political corruption, and the extreme measures one might take for love. The collaboration between composer David Sawer and playwright Rory Mullarkey adds depth to the operatic experience, offering a unique perspective on the original novel by Bolaño.
