The Soul of Bread is an interesting blend of comedy and romance set against the backdrop of a struggling bakery. It has this quirky vibe, right? Gao-bing, the main character, is sort of caught in the middle of a bakery that’s losing its charm. Mr. Chiu is all about his Rock 'n' Roll dreams, which feels both nostalgic and a tad absurd, while Di, the apprentice, lacks any passion for baking – it’s like watching a slow-motion train wreck. The pacing flows like dough being kneaded, sometimes a bit sluggish, but it pulls you in with its slice-of-life storytelling. The performances, especially from the leads, give it a genuine feel. It’s the mix of sweetness and melancholy that makes it stand out, like a bittersweet pastry. Definitely not your usual rom-com fare.
