The Spell of the Poppy

The story centers on Manfredi, a piano player in a Chinese café who struggles with opium addiction. After being sent abroad to study by a wealthy tourist, he promises to marry his common law wife, Zuletta, upon his return. However, five years later, he returns still addicted and becomes infatuated with Margery Rhodes, a society girl who begins to share his addiction.

As Manfredi's life spirals, Zuletta’s resentment grows. She reveals Manfredi's activities to John Hale, Margery's lover, who is in the secret service. Hale’s intervention leads to a raid on Manfredi's opium joint, aiming to protect Margery from the destructive influence of opium.
